Part 2 Project

10 Year Post High School Plan

I plan to spend the first 5 years following high school at SMU earning my master’s degree in Statistical Science. After earning my degree I would like to do my best to find a position working for the federal government developing statistical models and creating surveys. I will live wherever necessary for my life at the time and hopefully meet someone that I may settle down with. I will seize good opportunities as they  come but at the Pmoment, this is my general plan for myself.

Part 2 Project

Bachelor’s Degree

I would need to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Statistical Science which requires 122 credits to graduate, 42 of which must be in the Statistical Science curriculum.

Required classes needed to graduate with that degree are Calculus I, II, and III, Introduction to SAS, Experimental Statistics, Introduction to Mathematical Statistics, which add up to 24 credit hours.  An additional 9 credits must come from Advanced Statistics electives such as Categorical Data Analysis and Survey Sampling and another 9 credits from other electives.

AP credits are accepted with a score on the AP test of a 4 or 5. Assuming I receive a 4 or 5 on all of my AP exams I would receive the following credits: 6 Credits History 2311, 2312, 6 credits Discourse 1311,1312, 3 credits Math 1337, 3 credits Psychology 1300, and 6 credits Economics 1311, 1312 for a total of 24 credits.

Part 2 Project

After achieving my bachelor’s degree….

Statisticians will be eligible for more opportunities with a master’s degree or a Ph.D. so I plan to continue my education after obtaining my first degree in order to open my options even more. Statisticians with a master's degree or a Ph.D. usually can design their own work. They may develop new statistical methods. They may become independent consultants. I can continue my schooling at SMU as well because they offer both a master’s and Ph.D. in this particular major.

Part 2 Project

Statistician

I find this profession interesting because surveys and statistics are always intriguing to look at and study and I would like to have a deeper involvement with them. It is very math and science based which are my strengths and I enjoy them.  Statisticians design surveys or experiments or opinion polls to collect data, analyze and interpret data, and report conclusions from analyses. I would like to work for the federal government as a mathematical statistician. These workers develop advanced statistical models for several purposes, such as filling in gaps from nonresponses to surveys. This .profession currently has a booming job market, making employment to be fairly easy to find with a master's degree. This would be especially helpful in these tough economic times.  A recent salary survey found that the middle fifty percent of masters’ statisticians have annualized salaries between $95,000 and $155,000, which is a very impressive amount.

Part 2 Project

Southern Methodist University

I chose SMU as my school of choice because it fits the description of what I am looking for. The SMU Department of Statistical Science is a nationally recognized program and I feel I would get a strong education there. It is a medium sized school with about 6,200 undergraduate students and is away from home. The area is beautiful and warm and I believe I would have a really nice time there.

Part 1

What is Important to Me
It is important to me in a career that I am active throughout the day and that what I am doing is interesting to me.
It is important to me in a college that I go to a fairly big school with a reputable program for what I am studying, and that I am away from home.
Two Careers
Statistician-
Statisticians design surveys or experiments or opinion polls to collect data, analyze and interpret data, and report conclusions from analyses.
The education needed is usually a master’s degree in statistics, mathematics, or survey methodology. Some required subjects include differential and integral calculus, statistical methods, mathematical modeling, and probability theory.
I find this profession interesting because surveys and statistics are always intriguing to look at and study and I would like to have a deeper involvement with them.
Nutritionist/Dietitian-
Nutritionists explain nutrition issues, develop meal plans, and promote better nutrition by giving talks to groups about good eating habits.
Most nutritionists have earned a bachelor’s degree in dietetics, foods and nutrition, food service systems management, or a related area. Programs include courses in nutrition, physiology, chemistry, and biology.
This profession interests me because I know that unhealthy eating and obesity is a major problem of our time and I would like to make an effort to make America healthier.
